Current Status of the In Vitro Fertiliaztion and Embryo Transfer

Abstract
1
In vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET) were initially geared to the treatment of
omen with uncorrectable tubal infertility. However, IVF and ET has broadened its indication to
ncompass a wide variety of infertility disorders. In addition to surmounting intractable problems of infertility, programs of IVIT have contributed much to our Knowledge of reproductive physiology. ..The birth of Louise Brown in 1978, the first baby via IVF, was announced by Steptoe and ;:Edwards in 1979. Following that, almost 2,000 babies have been born worldwide. In Korea, the first successful baby via IVF was born at Seoul National University Hospital in 1.985.
Program for IVF-ET involves 4 major steps Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, Aspiration of `aocytes, Fertilization and cell division in laboratory, and Embryo transfer for implantation.
eoretically these steps are simple, but many difficulties are encountered in practice.
Current pregnancy rates for IVF patients indicate that the procedure may have to be repeated `nultiple times in many women. The success rates apear directly proportional to the number of available oocytes and the degree of ovarian stimulation.
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Chung Ang University Hospital started the IVF-ET `program in April 1991. There after we have good results and superior experience on IVF and new method of Assisted Reproductive Technolgy, eg. Peritoneal Oocyte & Sperm Transper (POST).
